Celebrating Pride and Inclusion in Abbotsford Schools

June 26, 2024

June marks the end of the school year and also brings PRIDE celebrations. The Abbotsford School District supports the inclusion of “gender identity and expression” as protected under the BC Human Rights Code. All staff and students have the right to express their identities respectfully and without discrimination.

“June is a time to celebrate PRIDE, but it’s also important to recognize the year-round efforts of our educators and SOGI 123 leads,” says the District’s equity-helping teacher. “They work tirelessly to create safe and inclusive spaces for our learners and their families.”

Abbotsford Schools intentionally reach for the inclusion of all students. Many do not know that SOGI 123 is not a curriculum. Instead, SOGI 123 stands for:

  1. Policies - Protecting the diversity of our school populations.
  2. Environments - Ensuring everyone feels welcome.
  3. Resources - Representing student diversity without discrimination.

Each school has a SOGI 123 lead who promotes inclusion through newsletters, safe space stickers, gender-inclusive resources, and staff presentations. These leads also sponsor inclusive clubs for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth and allies, offering a safe space for students to feel seen and heard.

Student and Educator Voices

“Our club supports student choice and voice, discussing topics that impact them directly,” says a secondary educator. A student adds, “It provides a safe space to be myself and meet new people without judgment.”

Throughout the year, schools recognize 2SLGBTQIA+ days, organize PRIDE spirit events, and create supportive communities. “Helping to lead the club has been significant. Seeing students grow confident and express themselves is inspiring,” shares another educator.

District-Wide Efforts

The district facilitates events like the secondary students' PRIDE Network and middle school social events, fostering connections and belonging among students. “Events planned just for us make me feel seen,” says a secondary student. Middle school students enjoy games, crafts, and community-building activities at district-wide celebrations.

Acknowledging Educators

Abbotsford School District appreciates the dedication of educators who build and sustain inclusive, safe, and accountable spaces for all. When everyone feels welcome, the learning experience improves. Happy PRIDE, everyone!
