Fostering Community Through Respectful Discourse
The interpersonal Lens invites us to explore the nature of our connectedness and the kinds of discourse we have within our school communities with students. The core of the Interpersonal Lens is recognizing the diversity that exists within our classrooms and engaging students in authentic and collaborative experiences to facilitate discussions that are open to diverse views and opinions as we seek to deepen learning around complex issues. As teachers engage students in thinking and reflecting on the Interpersonal Lens, the following guiding questions can be used to support student interaction that encourages discourse that addresses (in)equity, diversity and inclusion.
What it looks like:
- Supporting and encouraging student discourse that addresses (in)equity, diversity, and inclusion
- Modeling and nurturing an inclusive mindset
- Promoting well-being
- Providing opportunities for meaningful student engagement
Guiding Questions:
- How do my students respond to the diversity that is present in their classroom
- Is the classroom discourse respectful of the diversity of learners, their families, and their communities?
- Do students routinely examine their orientation and beliefs about diversity, and demonstrate an inclusive mindset?
- What is the connection between my sense of well-being and the educational experience I provide to my students? Interactions between students?
- How do I respond when I feel like students aren't engaged in classroom activities?
- How do I best support students who are experiencing difficulties?
- How do my personal preferences/biases affect how I interact with my students?
- Do I make every effort to get to know my students and their community?
